What are cookies?
Cookies are small pieces of information (text) that are created by websites you visit, that are sent to your browser (Internet Explorer) and Web pages you view. Some of these cookies are stored on your hard drive when you visit again the Web site that generated your browser sends cookies to this website.

The purpose of cookies is one of the following:
- To inform the website that you visited in the past. This information can be used to block some specific services (eg web pools, a one-time promotional services, etc..)
- To remember your username and password so you do not need to enter the next time you visit this website.
- To remember your personal information is important for the Web site you visit. It may be your name, personal preferences, advertising information, etc.

How to view cookies?
Cookies are stored in special folder on your hard drive. The location of this folder depends on the version of Windows and whether or not you are using user profiles (accounts). If you have Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows 95 then cookie folder is one of these locations:
C: WindowsCookies
C: WindowsProfiles \ Cookies

Note that on your computer in the Windows directory can not be C: Windows but to another directory. If you do not have a directory in your profile directory of Windows do not worry - it just means that you are not using user profiles.

If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000 then cookie folder is there (note that on your PC, there may be other disk instead of drive C):
C: Documents and Settings \ Cookies

If you have a single user account on Windows XP or Windows 2000, then replace the administrator for the roads.

In these cases, you can see all persistent cookies that are stored in your user account. The names of the cookie files are in form username @ hostname. For example, the cookie name administrator @ altavista [2] shows that this witness had www.altavista.com and the current computer user has been administrator. You can also open the cookie file to see its content, but most cases it will be encrypted and not readable by humans.

How to delete cookies?
You can delete cookies by deleting all text files in folders cookie on your computer. The folder locations cookie is given in the previous chapter.

The problem is that even if you delete all cookie files from files of cookies, most information for the cookies will not be deleted because it is stored in the index.dat file. In some cases, you can see the index.dat file in the cookie file, but even if you do not see it is there. You can not delete this file because Windows and Internet Explorer, it uses all the time. The only way to get rid of the cookies for good is to shred contents of index.dat file with a program specialist Privacy - Mil Shield. It cleans not only cookies but also the contents of index.dat files of all others (yes, there are many other index.dat files) with history, temporary Internet files, recently used the historical documents, Google or history of search toolbars MyWaySearch and many other tracks.
